Instagram Is Not Your Website

While attending a recent networking event, I noticed something rather peculiar. Quite a few attendees would state that they have a Instagram page when asked if they had a website.

Let me share this with you folks. Instagram is not your website!

If you are a business owner, again, your Instagram page not yours. It is a social media platform that you have an account with. You do not own this account, meaning all your business content can be shut down at anytime by Meta.

You need to own your domain name and your business content. Having a website allows this to be possible. Also, having your own website shows potential customers that you are serious about your business.

So what is the purpose of Instagram? The purpose to having an Instagram account or any other social media account is to direct potential customers back to your website. Think of your website as your brick and mortar store. Your social media accounts are marketing tools. Your X, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. are all marketing tools to attract attention to you and your business.

Social media is not a selling tool, as some business owners seem to think, it is an engagement tool. It is how you connect with current and potential customers.

Engage, engage, engage, engage, and engage some more!

Make each post a connection with your target audience. Share useful content. Use the 90-10 rule. Which means, 90 percent of your social media content should be useful to your followers. The other 10 percent should be advertising your products and services.

Remember this, the sole purpose of utilizing social media is to guide your followers directly to your website.
